Tickets for 'The King and I' on sale

Tickets go on sale Friday for the Iowa City Community Theatre's upcoming production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical “The King and I,” set for Sept. 12-14 at the Englert Theatre.
General admission tickets are $10 to $15 and available through the Englert Theatre box office at 221 E. Washington St., by calling (319) 688-2653 or online.
Set in 1862 Siam, “The King and I” is about English widow summoned to the Royal Palace to tutor the king’s many children and wives. The king is considered a barbarian by most living in the West and he seeks the widow’s help in changing his image. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and respect one another in a unique love story.
Tickets are also available for these upcoming events at the Englert:
Friends of Old Time Music, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets are free and may be reserved by contacting the box office. The performance will feature traditional and tradition-based music featuring Iowa City musicians. Featured bands include the Stones in the Field, an Eastern Iowa band dedicated to the world wide expansion of traditional Celtic music; The Gilded Bats, an Iowa City band playing Southern old-time string band music; Escape the Floodwater Jug Band, Iowa City inciters of do-it-yourself jug band mayhem; and The Awful Purdies, Iowa City's all-female super group.
Riff Raff Theater Presents I: Robot, Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10. Members of the Cedar Rapids comedy improve group Riff Raff Theatre will roast the Will Smith science fiction movie.
Dar Williams, Sept. 23, 8 p.m. Tickets are $27. Williams returns to the Englert for a concert featuring her insightful, melodic story-songs. On her new album, Promised Land, Williams continues to strip her music down to its very essence, injecting her songs with energy and excitement. With special guest Shawn Mullins.
Schoolhouse Rock – Live!, Oct 17-19. City Circle Acting Company, the Iowa Children's Museum and the Englert Theatre bring the pop culture “School House Rock – Live” phenomenon to town in the form of a musical in conjunction with an hands-on exhibit at the Iowa Children’s Musuem.
