Kids offered free bus rides to Iowa City Public Library
07-01-2008 | Family
The Iowa City Public Library is continuing to offer free bus rides this summer to help children get to the library and keep the reading habit all summer long.
Children through 12th grade, and the adult caregivers with them, may ride free on any Iowa City Transit bus on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from June 10 through August 14.
Children headed for the Library may get on any inbound IC Transit bus between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. by showing their Iowa City Public Library card. The buses stop at the downtown interchange at the Old Capitol Center, three blocks from the library at 123 S. Linn St.
For the free trip home, riders must pick up a “Ride and Read” bus pass from the library’s checkout desk. Passes are limited to one per day, and two per week. “Ride and Read” bus passes may be used at any time of day for the return trip.
Full bus route information is available at the Iowa City Transit web site or by calling Iowa City Transit at 356-5151.
“The library bus program expands the library’s outreach services to underserved children,” says Heidi Lauritzen, the library’s circulations services coordinator. “The summer months away from school can result in a loss of reading skills and the library wants to make it easier for kids to keep reading.”
