Alejandro Escovedo to perform at Englert April 3

Critically acclaimed musician, poet and storyteller Alejandro Escovedo will perform with his band April 3 at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City as part of the Mission Creek Midwest Festival, it was announced today.
All tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $20, said Englert managing director Sean Fredericks. Tickets go on sale today at 1 p.m.
Escovedo’s ninth solo album, Real Animal, will be released June 10 on the Back Porch label.
“It tells the story of my life in music, starting in San Francisco on through Rank & File and the True Believers,” Escovedo recently told the Austin Chronicle. Escovedo wrote the album with former Green on Red guitarist Chuck Prophet and the record was produced by Tony Visconti, mastermind behind classics from David Bowie, T. Rex and Thin Lizzy.
Escovedo’s solo career took off with 1992's critically acclaimed Gravity. Since then, Escovedo has recorded eight albums under his own name, in the process winning numerous awards and accolades, including "Artist of the Decade" from No Depression magazine.
While he was working on his new album, Escovedo was also helping “Silence of the Lambs” director Jonathan Demme write the score for his new Jimmy Carter documentary, “Man From Plains.” Demme, in turn, is directing a documentary based on Escovedo’s life. Demme has also directed the concert films “Stop Making Sense” and “Neil Young: Heart of Gold.”
“I really felt a connection with Carter’s compassion and honesty, his grounding to the earth,” Escovedo told the Chronicle.
The Englert also announced Friday that Iowa City’s Bo Ramsey will perform April 26 in support of his new album, Fragile. All tickets are $16 and on sale now.
